The technical requirements for such a unit were defined in collaboration with potential user groups. The result is a modular 19" rack unit that, in addition to a basic configuration, offers many options and alternatives regarding power input, power distribution, and safety functions.

The 19-inch, 3U power distribution unit Rack Safety Plus from nVent SCHROFF serves as a central power distributor with an emergency stop function, supplying electrical or electronic devices with AC and 24 V DC. It includes all the safety and power distribution features required for the operation of semi- or fully-automated test systems.

The technical requirements for such a unit were defined in collaboration with potential user groups. The result is a modular 19" rack unit that, in addition to a basic configuration, offers many options and alternatives regarding power input, power distribution, and safety functions.

Depending on customer preferences and application requirements, Rack Safety Plus can be individually configured and delivered to the customer as a complete, functional unit. This saves customers time and costs, as they no longer need to develop and manufacture this part of the infrastructure themselves.

As of October 2024, nVent has updated the European version of Rack Safety Plus with further technical improvements.

The updates in detail:

Improved Input Protection

A K-characteristic circuit breaker on the front panel replaces the previous input fuses. The circuit breaker switches all phases as well as the neutral conductor. Rack Safety Plus units with an RCD (Residual Current Device) are equipped with an RCD circuit breaker combination unit (instead of the input protection breaker described above).

Optimized Air Distribution

An internal partition with two low-noise fans has been integrated. These fans help improve air distribution to the components, aiding in dissipating heat within the enclosure.

Modular and Configurable

Various 1-phase and 3-phase plugs are available as power input options, and customers can choose whether they want an integrated EMC filter. Both the front and rear sides feature defined areas designed as partial front panels, allowing easy and convenient swapping of functions or interfaces. These include status LEDs, service sockets, an RCD (residual current device), circuit breakers, and a laboratory switch on the front for disconnecting outputs. On the rear side, customers can select the types and number of output sockets. Optionally, DC voltages can also be generated internally, with additional DC outputs available.

The safety functions comply with EN ISO 13849-1 Category 1 and 2 and include an emergency stop button on the front panel that shuts down all outputs. The emergency stop button is monitored by a special safety relay and a redundant safety circuit, ensuring that Rack Safety Plus always shuts down when the emergency stop button is pressed, even if an internal fault occurs. Should such a fault happen, it will be indicated on the device's front panel. There is also an additional output for an external emergency stop on the rear of the unit. In units with the optional RCD, the input circuit breaker is replaced by a combined device, which unites the circuit breaker and RCD function into one unit, shutting down the device completely in the event of a fault current or overcurrent. In the future, a remote management module may also be integrated, enabling users to monitor all statuses from a PC via the internet and perform switching functions remotely. An optional 24V power supply can also be integrated, with its status displayed via an LED on the front of the device.

Additional surge protection units and current-limiting modules can be integrated as well. A current-limiting module can be particularly useful when the test application is equipped with many PCs or servers that need to be switched on simultaneously via the main switch. Without current limitation, the fuse would likely trip due to the high power draw during startup. On request, the safety requirements can be implemented according to EN ISO 13849-1 Category 1 or 2 only; however, our standard meets the strictest safety level, Category 3.

Although Rack Safety Plus is designed as a single unit housing both safety and power distribution functions, it can be split into two separate enclosures upon customer request. To configure the individual safety and power distribution unit, our online configurator is available.
